Great ideas to try at your child's next dance theme party, from turning blinking Christmas lights into disco lights to playing conga line and freeze dance party games.

A girl's dance party is the perfect idea for anyone who is a fan of the movie, High School Musical. Here are some fun ideas to consider.

Dance Party Invitations

It is easy to make a cool invitation for a dance party. Just use the cover of any dance party album for inspiration. Take a scrap booking paper that has a deco feel (so it looks like the lights in a disco), add a few star stickers, and print the words, “Dance Party”. Use fonts such as Musicals or Fortuna Dot, free at Simply the Best Fonts. Print the details of the party on the back. Place the invite in the front of a CD jewel case for more impact.

Dance Party Songs

Any of the Kid's Dance Party CDs are preferable, because any bad language has been cleaned up. Artists like Hannah Montana and the Jonas brothers are also popular and there is no need to worry about mature lyrics. Play the soundtrack from High School Musical or Hairspray or download songs that have no lyrics like Crazy Frog or Popcorn, which are well known because they are cell phone ring tones.

Dance Decorations

Section off an area for a dance floor, or maybe just clear out an office or bedroom and designate it as the dance area.

To decorate:

  • Hang metallic curtains (available at any party supply store) and floating stars
  • Put glow in the dark star stickers on the walls and ceiling (ones that peel off easily)
  • Hang a large disco ball from the ceiling, again available at any party store, but mini ones can be found at the dollar store. Several of these may serve the same purpose.
  • Disco lights can be purchased for a few dollars which is essentially a flashing colored light, or improvise and use items already have on hand, such as stringing indoor blinking Christmas lights across the ceiling or just changing all the light bulbs in the room to black
  • Suspend a net of balloons from the ceiling to drop at the end of the party
  • Provide the girls with accessories such as feather boas, glitter makeup, glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets, colored hair pieces and play microphones.

Dance Party Games

Spot Light Dance - One parent should put on a blindfold (to be fair), then have the girls dance. Standing on top of a step ladder, lower the lights and sway a flashlight around and when the music stops, whoever the flashlight is on is out.

Limbo - Limbo contests are always fun, especially to music. Just get two volunteers to hold a stick while the girls take turns limbo-ing under it. After each round lower the stick another inch.

Freeze Dance - Have everyone dance and when the music stops they have to freeze or hold their position. Whoever is the first to move is out.

Conga Line Musical Chairs - Have the girls create a conga line to dance around a group of chairs. A conga line is where the girls must put their hands on the hips of the person in front of them. Stop the music and whoever doesn’t get on a chair is out.

Other Activities

Purchase a wooden letter for each girl’s first initial of their name. Then have them decorate the letter by gluing on craft store rhinestones that resemble the mini mirror tiles on a disco ball. It makes a cute accessory for their room.

Loot Bags

It is fairly inexpensive to make a copy of the CD of the music you played at the party for each girl’s loot bag. Glitter nail polish, a dance charm on a chain, or dance snap-ons for Croc shoes are all fun things to add to the loot bag. Put it all in a sequined pull string sack, also available at any craft store.

We have a Coed Dance Party every year for our 4 girls. The ages range from 2-14 but mostly family so it's ok. We have the strob lights, disco ball, games, snack and goody bags at the end of the night. All the kids get very excited when the invitations arrive announcing this years Dance Party.
